It is essential for the believer to have an active prayer life and make prayer a priority. Prayer includes alone time spent in direct communication with the Lord. The Lord desires for us to come before him in prayer. Jesus even said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” in Matthew 7:7. Paul stated that one should pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Nonetheless, as believers, we may experience prayerlessness when we have no desire to pray, or we do not pray unless an urgent situation arises. Prayerlessness can have adverse consequences for the believer.
Consequences of Prayerlessness
1. Bearing Unnecessary Burdens
When we lack prayer, we often become restless, and our responsibilities become more burdensome. As we pray, we allow the Lord the ability to remove our difficulties and give us His peace.
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
– 1 PETER 5:7 (ESV)
2. Vulnerability to the Devil
Prayerlessness makes us vulnerable to the enemy’s aggression.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour – 1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
3. Discouragement
When we cease to pray, our troubles become even bigger mentally and physically, especially when our own solutions fail and weariness steps in. Hopelessness becomes unavoidable without prayer because only God can solve our issues the perfect way in our best interest.
4. Instability and Insecurity
Without prayer, we may lose confidence, begin to doubt that our situations will improve, and subsequently become unstable in our daily lives. However, if we continue in prayer, we will find the strength to remain confident in God’s faithfulness with the belief that He will fulfill His great promises towards us.
